THIS SI DE OF AUSCHWITZ
Walter Benjamin’s route to Portbou
Rolf Tiedemann

1939 - 1 Setember: the invasion of Poland by German troops starts at 04.45 hours; that same aftemoon Great Britain and France present Germany with an ultimatum demanding the withdrawal of the troops from Poland; 3 September: the French ultimatum expires at eleven o'clock: France is in a estate of war with the Third Reich; 1 October: the war with Poland ends with the entry of German troops begins; 28 October: the deportation of German Jews to Poland begins; 28 October: the Jews are forced to wear the yellow estar in public; 8 November: an assassination attempt against Hitler fails in Munich.
1940 - 9 April: German troops occupy Denmark and Norway; 10 May: invasion of Belgium, Holland and France; 3 June: air raid on Paris; 14 June: German troops occupy Paris; 17 June: Pétain government formed in Vichy; 22 June: France and Germany sign the armistice: amongst other things, France to hand over German exiles.
Walter Benjamin, who had been living in exile in Paris since 1933, escaped from the city in the middle of June, 1940. «1 managed to gest on the last train out of Paris. All I had with me was a small suticase with two shirts and a toothbrush.» (Hannah Arendt). A couple of days later, more Germans arrived in Paris. Amongst the newcomers there was soon a representation of the literary and artistic front: Benjamin had occasionally had dealings with some of them before 1933. Emst Jünger and Carl Schmitt arrived; the first was translating the farewell letters of the hostages who where going to be shot, and the other, Baudelaire. Ina Seidel brought with her her concern for a son-in-Iaw who was chamber astrologer to a Nazi bigwig. Friedrich Sieburg exercised his powers of fascination in the salons, Heinrich George was having great success with Cábalas y amor and Herbert Karajan with Tristan. Carl Schmitt was giving talks on the need to distinguish between land and sea in international law. They would have lunch in the Prunier restaurant, and in the evening they would go to the Tabarin and on Sundays to the Madeleine. And they got on wonderfully with their French colleagues: not only with raving Nazis like Céline and Drieu la Rochelle, but also with more exquisite souls such as Girandoux and Cocteau, Paul Morand and Léautaud -all of them people whose company Benjamin had sought out. They talked of Proust, they exchanged autographs by Proust; it Was a delightful circle, and by then Proust's German translator had already been dead some time. On 15 June 1940 the poet Marcel Jouhandeau wrote in his diary, «L'armée allemande se répand par la ville (...). Before 1933 Benjamin, who knew Jouhandeau, had described him as someone of «a very distinguished, rather unhealthy appearance»; he had translated some of Jouhandou's most beautiful stories. But now, according to a reliable witness, the poet met Ernst Jünger in «the little house in the rue du Commandant Marchand», where the two spent hours talking about the things they knew, their working methods and their love of animals» (Gerhard Heller). At the same time, in the Paris bookshops you could by Jouhandeau's pamphlet Le péril juif, which had been published in 1937.
In mid-June 1940 Benjamin travelled from Paris to Lourdes, the Pyrenean sanctuary where many of the exiles fleeing from their former countrymen gathered. At that time, Lourdes was in unoccupied France; also, it was not far from the Spanish border, which all of them were going to have to cross. Benjamin's decision to move there must also have been influenced by the fact that his sister had been interned in the Gurs camp, which was only 60 kilometres from Lourdes as the crow files. In fact, after her release, Dora Benjamin \,vas able to join her brother and stayed with him in Lourdes until he left for Marseilles in mid-August. On 2 August Benjamin sent a letter to Adorno from Lourdes, in which he reproduced Kafka's «voice of the messenger of misfortunes»: «For some weeks my existence has been dominated by the most utter uncertainty as to what the next day or the next hour might bring. I am condemned to sea all the newspapers (here they have been reduced to a single page) as a summons directed at me, and to hear in each radio station the voice of the messenger of misfortunes.» Since the direct post office line was usually cut or else functioned with difficulty, communications between Benjamin and the New York Institute of Social Studies -the only organisation that was concerned for him- took place via Juliane Favez, the Institute's representative in Geneva. On 3 August 1940 she received a telegram from Friedrich Pollock: «Please ask Benjamin to travel immediately Marseille where American visitors visa with highest probability waiting for him.» The guarantee which Max Horkheimer had signed for Benjamin and which should have cleared the way for him to get to the United States was dated 6 August.
Benjamin arrived in Marseilles sometime between 16 and 20 August, probably the 17th or 18th. There were still a number of his friends there -for example, Sigfried Kracauer and Fritz Frankel, Arthur Koestler, Hans Sahl and Hilde SchroedeBerthon. We do not know the name of the hotel he stayed at; he had his correspondence sent to an accommodation address. He managed to get transit to leave France. Finally he decided to leave the country illegally with Henny Gurland, a woman he knew slightly, and her sisxteen-year-old son, Joseph. It was probably Monday 23 September when the little group left Marseilles by train, bound for Perpignan, and from there they must have gone on towards the Spanish border. With a bit of luck the police controls in the stations could be avoided. In Port-Vendres, near the border, they got off the train and went to the home of Lisa Fittko, an exile from Berlin. It seems to have been her husband, Hans Fittko, whom Benjamin had met the year before in the camp at Vemuche, near Nevers, and whom he had met again in Marseilles, who had recommended her for her knowledge of the area. On 25 September Lisa Fittko took Benjamin and the Gurlands across the Pyrenees from Banyls; forty years later she described this escape in detail.
Between 1940 and 1941 a number of exiles escapad by this or similar routes, which Herbert Mann described as follows: «Very soon the path was lost in the scrub. We had to make our way jumping from rock to rock. The best thing we could do was to adopt the habits of the goats, the usual inhabitants of the area. (oo.) The goat track that led us into exile made us forget many painful impressions; it demanded a physical efforts of uso It was years since I had climbed a mountain of any height, now I felt awkward and I was no longer young: several times I fell into the bushes. It was impossible to avoid getting the thoms stuck in our feet. AIII needed was to get them in my hands as well.» Benjamin must have gone through a similar experience, although he failed to'leave a written record of the difficulties the g'roup encountered. First they crossed some vineyards; there were ripe grapes which the young Gurland, especially, ate. In some places the path climbed steeply. It was a very hot day. For Benjamin and Mrs Gurland the effort was exhausting; Benjamin was 48 and his health was delicate. Ahead of them they could see a group of women who were also trying to cross the border illegally. Sometimes they met other people who seemed to be locals; they carried firewood and, possibly, contraband goods. They looked friendly, though slightly amused. Obviously, Benjamin and his companions were not normal mountaineers, neither did they look like the kind of people who usually engaged in border traffic. Several times they lost their way, but finally the group came to the last hill before the border. From there they could see the road to Portbou, and two policemen (or members of the Guardia Civil) who seemed to be guarding the point where the mountain path joined the road into the town. When Benjamin's group got to the road, they had disappeared; presumably they had gone to accompany the women ahead. Later on, they all met in the police station, where Benjamin and his companions had also gone to complete the entry formalities into the country. This was how the seventeen-year-old Joseph Gurland saw it and how he remembered if forty years late.
Thanks to Henny Gurland, we know what happened afterwards: the threat of retuming the fugitives to France, which amounted to extradition to Germany, and Benjamin's suicide -he died on 22 September, at 10 p.m., from a large dose of morphine tablets he had taken the night before; both this and Lisa Fittko's accounts are familiar enough to USo As Joseph Gurland remembers it, they spent the night of 25-26 September in a small hotel, the Fonda Francia, which later came to be called the Hostal lntenacional. Joseph Gurland heard from his mother next day that Benjamin had poisoned himself. Through the closed door, he could hear him gasping for breath. Mrs Gurland spent the whole day at the dying man's side. A doctor was called who made out a prescription which the young Gurland went to fetch from the chemist's. (We know today that this doctor was a certain Dr. Ramon Vila who died in 1944). On his way back, Josep Gurland saw a Catholic priest, dressed in his vestment, going towards the hotel with a couple of altar boys ringing their little bells. Mrs Gurland later comli'lented to her son that she was glad she knew enough of the Catholic ritual to have been able to join in the rite of the extreme unction. The young Gurland's impression was that is had meant a lot to his mother to have managed to get a priest to attend. «1 still wonder today how much of the medical situation was really understood by the doctor and the priest and how much was either pity or convenience on their parto 1 never had any doubts that Benjamin indeed had killed himself, and thereby made possible our (and the other ladies') continued trip and probably in the end saved our lives. I am sure that it was essential then for us that the act of suicide be hidden from the police.» Mrs Gurland took charge of the arrangements for Benjamin's funeral, which she and her son. did not attend.
Benjamin's death was recorded in the register of deaths of Portbou. The cause of death is given as «hemorragia cerebral». What is most surprising is that alongside the entry in the regis
ter is a passport photograph of Benjamin which is endorsed by the local magistrate's stamp. The photograph must have been amongst the dead man's personal possessions; it may be the last photograph ever taken of Benjamin. Henny Gurland purchased a grave for Benjamin in the cemetery at Portbou for a period of five years. There, in niche number 563, Benjamin was buried on 28 September 1940. On 20 December 1945 the niche changed hands and it and the one below were knocked into one. Benjamin's remains were moved to the ossuary. Benjamin therefore has no grave. Sometimes vistors. are shown a niche with Benjamin's name scribbled on it. These are mystifications, and are not, as Scholem suggests, «an invention of cemetery staff (...) in search of a tip», so much as macabre jokes by German tourists with a smattering of culture. Portbou has not escaped the modemization by concrete and steel which has taken place in the second half of the century. The cemetery, though, still overlooks the town and its little bay, as it did in September 1940. Only a commemorative stone in Catalan, placed next to the entrance, remembers the philosopher who in the fifty years following .his death has not been considered worthy of heaving one in German.
1940 - 22 October: Jews from south-eastem Germany are
deported to the south of France.
1941 - 22 June: German troops invade the Soviet Union; 15
September: fist experiments with gas in Auschwitz.
1942 - 20 January: the «final solution» to the «Jewish problem» announced at the Wannsee Conference; 9 March: first mass deportations of Jews from France to Auschwitz.

Initially, the text published in Valencia under the title La creación artística como cuestionamiento said: «Ir the world has become a simulacrum (the end of ideologies, the crisis of cultural identity), artistic creation as experience and as the producer of new realities becomes part of a new Expressionist Romanticism, as a way out the blind alley of the present proliferation of frivolity and decoration imposed by practical reasoning and speculation. The present complexity of trends in the market, wíth its shared interests, influences only the market; it mimics the market.»

The «expressionist romantic» concept and its implications for my work is a subject which interests me because of its connections, since, although at first the concepts seem to be opposed, they have points in common. In this respect, Simon Marchan, in an interview reproduced in El arte conceptual revisado, by J.V. Aliaga and J.M. Cortés, establishes a relationship between Romanticism and Conceptualism which strikes me as interesting. Marchan points out the leading role, in Romanticism, of the conception over and above formal and technical solutions: «We tend to understand as style only the treatment of the language; but thought and language constantly intermingle and the way in which a subject is originally conceived is passed on to the structure and thus to the treatment of the image.»(1)

The concept of «art for reflection» is common to both Romanticism and Conceptualism and sometimes, as in the use of nature as a «Landscape to be treated», it also implies isolation from society. The Romantic landscape is different to the present one, in disappearing, but it was also chosen as a reference to solitude, in search of the silence necessary for reflection.

On the other hand, the Art/Society binomial has more in common with Expressionism, which instead of evading the society that surrounded it confronted the crisis in the same way as Zarathrusta confronted the snake: biting it. This aggresive, critical attitude to reality, rather than growing stronger, has been lost. «The point has come where regenerating potentialities cannot be roused in the spectator; all that can be done is to make him aware of his triviality.» (2)

The rejection of reference in certain works has been replaced, as in my own work, by reflection as an element of analysis of the interior reality influenced by the exterior reality. This reflexive filter, thought and language, understanding and imagination, has little to do with evasion, even though at first sight it shows no direct confrontation with reality. In contrast, it suggests a criticism of society and a demand for the conversion of nature into landscape.

1. IMAGES, RUINS AND FRAGMENTS

«The Nature/Society antagonism Man is inclined to enter into Society, because in this way he feels more of a man -that is, he feels the development of his natural dispositions. But he also has a great tendency to isolate himself.»(3)

This is the difference between the ontological and the epistemological: to act, to make history, as opposed to that which has no history -in other words, nature provides points for discussion. What I find extraordinary about nature is precisely that being susceptible to enjoying it, pure observation with no other object than to watch the cycle of changes taking place. On the other hand, it is society that provides dialectic knowledge; ideas are formed that enter the individual and set off a critical dialogue with oneself and with one's surroundings -in other words, individualized thought open to different readings.

Nature and Spirit, even though opposed, give my work meaning. Nature even when it has no supporting subject to allow the Spirit to realize itself through observation. Society's reflection influences the nature/landscape in the sense that it is destroying it and progress threatens its existence. The landscape comes to an end the moment it is ignored.

«The society of information generates social uniformity throughout the world and has determining consequences.» (4) There is no criticism, either cultural or political, because reality has been replaced by an image: we are an image.

Therefore, nature begins to be a subject of history as soon as knowledge enters an age of uncertainly, or dies. This current «restructuring» (5) is simply a banality, a guarantee of not wanting to know anything more, let others choose for you, as if the world were no more than reflection.

I. IMAGES, RUINS ANO FRAGMENTS

«Construction is a basic principle of all modernist text» (6) and, subsequently, they can be read individually or together. The example of the boxes (Fragmentació, 1986) suggest that they be read individually; the subject exists, but it is the whole that gives it meaning. Myth and Realism complement one another, Romanticism and Expressionism, this effect and this reality, this choice, rather than anything formative, gives access to the dream that our awakening cuts short. «Architectural ruins with the hills and the rocks clearly reveal the romantic spell of a world that has sunk into remoteness.» (7 )The ruins of factories and industrial buildings where men once worked have become homes and gardens; nothing is left of what we were, the landscape has become a hybrid (Landscape and Prothesis).

«AII the same, it's a fact that I have stirring, memorable pictures of the exhaustion of manual labourers, but of the exhaustion of those who look after automatic machines, I have (as yet) not a single one.»

INNER LANDSCAPE. Francesc Abad

The creative work of what are known as the «historic conceptual artists», on which, in view of the time that has gone by since their appearance in the seventies, we can now reflect and express an opinion, can be seen (at least in muy own case, since I have always been driven by a «pseudo-professionalism» which is not exempt from all sorts of motivacions other than professional ones) as an estrangement from the game of art.

At first, this estrangement meant that we did no get to form part of the artistic programmes of the market.

It now seems that -after a long silence- we many soon be able to show our work once again, since the time is ripe for a certain «neo-conceptual» return which makes it possible for the work produced to be exhibited.

Since 1986, then, the recovery of a task begun in 1972 has got under way. Today, I am returning to the original idea as the genesis of my work, but the medium and the formal aspects are completely different. Previously, the material realization tended to act as a social revulsive; now, I would say that it still acts in the same way but with different results -that is, with more resources but moving towards a very personal poetry, a poetry that tends towards art as something that forces us to think. Evidently, that rigidity, that rejection of the aesthetic qualities of our work, has now been tempered.

In fact, however, the problem of the chances for professionalization have not yet been solved, since it is still

difficult to exhibit this work -at least, in the case of installations-, as the preliminary work of preparing any project is intricate and difficult because of its very nature and complexity

-especially in a country which is not yet used to the idea of sponsorship and where the few collectors and museums that exist do not normally take this kind of work into account.

REMARKS

After this brief introduction, I would like to say that speaking about what one does is not easy, in the sense that it is necessary to give (form, through words, to a whole process which is not easy to explain to oneself. There are too many -initially subjective- factors in the elaboration of a theory of artistic creation, though there are essential elements that characterize it in a very general way.

Projects do not come about according to a logical chain of moments, neither are they ¡intended to develop a rational initial idea. On the contrary, my projects follow a random path, it is chance that gives me the idea which I then develop. My work process consists in searching for the necessary information which allows me to decipher the enigma with which chance manifests itself.

I would like to add that materialization of an ideative process involves living with it for a certain length of time. In this way, the relationship of the installation artist with his work is very different from that which exists between the artist and the sculptor.

Between the traditional artist and his work there is the mediator of the substance -the physical qualities of his material provide a channel for immediate communication. On the other hand, for the conceptual artist, matter and form are merely the more or less appropriate means by which a mental process is materialized.

THE WORK PROCESS

The idea as form (how the form is made)

The structure of the idea is made up of three parts:

1st The outline notes

2nd The part as fragment

3rd The whole, the installation

The outline notes precede the «part» and the «whole», and

their realization consists of three phases which integrate the insistent contradictions of the world and the complexity of things. In a way it is the density of the residues accumulated by memory, everyday reality and the interior world or poetic vision.

The part as fragment is the realization of the notes, now with form and occupying the minimum of space, without yet being an installation. In fact, this form is part of the global creative spiral which in turn is made up of different objectual elements which give and already occupy a space, unlike the outlines notes.

The whole -the installation- is the occupation of the totality of the space on the part of the concept/object, in which one goes from being no more than an observer to being an active subject physically incorporated into the artistic space itself.

The process of the form comes about as a result of work which is jotted down, accumulated, which is then selected to produce the final college. As a result of this process of the different parts that come together and complement each other, the global production process gives rise to an associated whole wich could be described as a visual/textual essay.

The content of the form

First of all, there are things that are impossible to communicate or to express in words, things like feellings and emotions which are of a subjective and complex nature -because the world is too. The formation of images which are initially disordened comes about through the comparison of thoughts, memories, texts that represent a working hypothesis, the need for a narration of my habitual obsessions (the landscape, the sea, the boat, the seagulls...).

These images are actually created by attractions and repulsion and are chosen on speculation. In the totality of the creative process the text subjectivizes the image. The text, as metaphysics, as a narrative dimension, the hermeneutics of the contents, acts as a support for the image and gives it a history. The arrangement of text and image makes up a metaphoric allegory of the object installed. I am interested in this world that is not the world of immediacy. Knowledge, as I have already said, has a slow process; urban society, in its haste, seems to forget this, seems. unaware of the poetic landscape, memory. The assimilation of this poetry needs the slowness and silence that make it possible.

Criticism as reflection

The knowledge of reality arises from the split -in industrial society- between the intellectual abstraction of the speculative world and the world of sensibility.

Finding a basis on which to criticise society and culture, when thinking itself has been reduced to an industrial process subjected to a marked economy, only leaves the work of the

artist the way of criticism and pessimism, in the sense that nostalgia (Longing) for change can not exist.

One has to stand back from society in order to criticise ¡t, because it seeks only immediate stimulation. One therefore has to interiorize in search of a meaningful projection, search for that silence in which even the world is manipulated by its own sound, and turn noise into information. There is less and less call to reflection, and more and more to use and consumption and to the conformity of the messages transmitted. My work is therefore intented to show at once the reality and the emancipatory fantasy or interior world, through daydreams, which according' to Bloc~ are what make the objectively possible grow -in other words;, provide a meaning and search for a content.

MÁS ACÁ DE AUSCHWITZ *
El camino de Walter Benjamin a Portbou
Rolf Tiedemann

El 3 de agosto de 1940 ésta recibió un telegrama firmado por Friedrich Pollock: <<Please ask Benjamin to travel immediately Marseille where American visitors visa with highest probability waiting for him.»
«I stil/ wonder today how much of the medical situation was rea/ly understood by the doctor and the priest and how much was either pity or convenience on their parto / never had any doubts that Benjamin indeed had kil/ed himself, and thereby made possible our (and the other ladies) continued trip and probably in the end save our lives. I am sure that it was essentia( then for us that the act of suicide be hidden from the police.»

I. IMÁGENES, RUINAS Y FRAGMENTOS

August 1940 ein von Friedrieh Polloek unterzeiehnetes Telegramm: «Please ask Benjamin to travel immediately Marseille where American visitors visa with highest probability waiting for him.» Vom 6.

«1 still worder today how much of the medical situation was really understood by the doctor and by the priest and how much was either piti or convenience on their parto I never had any doubt that Benjamin had indeed killed himself and thereby made possible our (and the other ladies) continued trip and probably in the end saved our lives. I am sure that it was essential then for us that the act of suicide was hidden from the police.»
